By Nancy Cayford—

It has been a year since we, Friends of the Oglala Lakota, had a book drive in Dublin. There’s no official drive this year, but we can still use books. If you want to donate some that your children no longer use, you can leave them at the Dublin Church or call Nancy at 563-8021. We love any DK Eyewitness book, Wimpy Kid books, and I Can Read books. We can’t use text books or religious books. You can also visit our website to read more about the book project: www.lakotafriends.org.

Some of you might have seen ABC’s 20/20 show on Children of the Plains, which aired last month. As a result of that show, a teacher, Denise Sulewski, of the PACE Brantley School in Longwood, FL, told us her students wanted to help the children of Pine Ridge. The school is for children with handicaps and learning disabilities, and has a high homeless rate. Their book drive yielded five boxes of new books. We were moved to tears, and honored by the generosity of these children. Generosity is one of the important traditions of the Lakota culture.
