Winter finally arrived in January! With one snow day and one delayed opening already as I write this, only halfway through the month, perhaps Blizzard Bags will be in our future! Every student in the district has by now received his or her own personal blizzard bag – five days’ worth of school work – which could be used on a snow day. When the call comes, the superintendent will designate the day as a blizzard bag day (or not, in the case of widespread power outages), and students will be able to complete a day’s worth of assignments, on paper or online. This will allow us to not have to make up the day in June! We’ll see how it goes.
Our ski program is going strong – we lost one ski day early on, but will make it up this month. More than half our students ski at Crotched Mountain on Thursday afternoons for five weeks. This is a fabulous program, and we always have our PTO to thank, but the Dublin Community Foundation helped us out this year too. Lara Scheinblum took over the organization and overseeing of the ski program this year, after a long, successful, and dedicated run by Donna White. Thanks go to all these people!
And speaking of the Dublin Community Foundation, it has generously agreed to pay for the Lend-an-Ear program again this year, and we had our first visit from the musicians in January. The second and third graders all get to enjoy this wonderful exposure to classical music over the course of the winter.
January also marks the halfway point of our school year, and another round of testing. We accomplished the winter versions of the NWEA test on the computer for students in grades 1-5, and everyone did the Aimsweb benchmark testing in reading.
In February we will have more from Lend-an-Ear, more skiing, and more learning! The Recreation Department is planning its wonderful Winterfest on the DCS/Town of Dublin playground for Feb. 11 – don’t miss it! And stop in any time to visit – just call 563-8332 or email (mclark@nullconval.edu) first!
