Summer in Dublin is back (in person), and the August 2022 Advocate celebrates the return of traditional Dublin Summer activities like Summer Playground Program, the Annual Chicken BBQ at the DubHub, Summer Reading at the Library, and the cleanup and use of Dublin’s Baseball Field. Many thanks to all who help to make these priceless memories for our town.
This month Dublin Public Library is busy with an art exhibit (Culture Keepers, Culture Makers), an author visit (Michael Tougias), and a Summer Reading Send-off Party.
Other town news includes a reminder to license your dog, and guidelines from the Planning Board for short-term property rentals. The Chief of Police introduces Officer Stephen Dalterio, and shows off the department’s new vehicle purchased as a result of a 2022 warrant article which passed in March.
With the upcoming NH State Primary on Tuesday, September 13, we provide information about Democratic and Republican candidates running for Governor, Executive Council, State Senator, and State Representative. Do your homework now and be prepared for the vote in September!
Dublin Consolidated School welcomes new principal Shawne Hilliard, and our ConVal School Board representative shares information about student and staff safety measures, including Emergency Operations Plans, Emergency Management Teams, a proposed School Resource Officer, and security audit.
We recognize the accomplishments of two more graduates this month, and hear how the Dublin Community Preschool & Childcare Center benefited from the efforts of “Team Depot,” a crew of associates from Home Depot.
The Baha’i community celebrates its annual remembrance of Abdu’l-Baha’s visit to Dublin in 1912. The Historical Society devotes its monthly Dublin History quiz to this consequential visit.
Dublin resident Ken Levine shares his absorbing journey researching his family history, offering family stories and helpful tips for using traditional and online resources to discover names, dates, places, and relationships that are preserved in historical records.
The DubHub continues its mission of bringing residents together for learning, sharing, and feasting. This month a three-person art show by Jean Mann, her granddaughter Natalie Dexter, and AnneMarie Warren opens, Open Stage resumes, and the Chicken BBQ returns. Coming soon in September – a community-wide collaboration to learn chess and backgammon!
The Sharing Arts Ceramics Center is up and running in Dublin, and all are invited to try their hand at pottery. They benefit from a creative partnership with MAXT Makerspace in Peterborough, as do forward-thinking collaborators Dan Saulnier and CJ Burton who are developing a hyper-local plastics recycling projecct. These efforts and more can be seen at MAXT’s Night Market in downtown Peterborough on August 12.
Be on the lookout for invasive forest pests that are currently being monitored in our state – NHBUGS.org is a resource for identifying damaging insects and disease. The Asian jumping worm is just one of these startling invaders!
“Dublin Businesses Old and New” continues at the School Museum on Saturdays throughout August. The Historical Society will hold their Annual meeting at the Library on August 24 at 5:30 pm.
As always, summer in Dublin gets us outside using our treasured outdoor resources. The Dublin Women’s Community Club can use your help closing up the beach on August 27 (rain date August 28), and the Harris Center is offering an exploratory paddle or hike on August 28 to the Howe Reservoir Dam which has been under construction this summer. Rick MacMillan shares his interest in establishing an outdoor sculpture garden in town.
Arts are blooming in August in Dublin – the Peterborough Players, Amos Fortune Forum, Monadnock Lyceum, Hillside Trio, and Electric Earth Concerts all offer opportunities for music, theater, and discussion of ideas.
Don’t forget to support three worthy organizations that serve those in need in our community – End 68 Hours of Hunger, Cheshire Volunteer Transporation Committee, and Casa of NH.
